ARTIST'S STATEMENT BY MARY MAUGHELLI
My work is often art about art and relies on images from art history which are included in many of my paintings and works on paper.
My work is about identity, the body, the human female figure and its strengths and weaknesses. Through the juxtaposition of the figure from the past and present together with symbols, I am searching to create a more unique view of the body which relies on personal associations rather than exclusively descriptive imagery.
Most recently I have become involved in combining collage with mixed media on paper and wood panels.
I am continuously concerned with dualities and opposites: inside-outside, surface-interior, positive-negative, appearance-identity, and concrete-spiritual.
